A difficult book to rate if only because it is in two distinct parts, and they are not equal in quality. The first part is uproarious and fun. Even if you guess the narrator's mother's identity, it won't affect your enjoyment as the plot unfolds. Uptight, upright retired banker Henry Pulling meets his adventure-living, none too concerned with legalities Aunt Augusta. Everything he understood about life begins to be undone by his elderly but unretiring aunt. Enjoy the ride they take for the first part. The second part completely breaks introverted Henry's shell and turns him into a thoughtless fool for adventure and an acolyte to someone who seemingly has followed Ayn Rand's outlook. Doesn't matter who gets hurt, just follow your passion. Henry may be told no one's morality is better than another's and not to be a judge, but when actions trample, even kill, others, then yeah maybe a bit of judginess is apt. When others must pick up the pieces and change their life to clean up the mess, then, yeah, time to have an opinion. Janis Joplin did a better job singing about freedom in Bobby McGee. The second half of the novel sinks the first half, and the joy ride spins out of control and beggars belief. I have serious issues with how this book was billed. They claimed this to be a pot-smoking jaunt with a hilarious aunt. They did smoke pot in the book, once, and the old aunt seemed like a sourpuss through most of the book. I read lots of books from the 70's about hippies and thought this book would be in that genre (based on their description) but it was FAR from it. It's not a bad book (not an overly great one either) but it did not live up to how it was described on most any level.
